For a blind woman named Maria Colon, Yolanda the Golden Retriever is not just a guide dog, but also her guardian angel!
The woman was rendered helpless when her Philadelphia home caught fire in the middle of the night. However, Yolanda saved her life by actually dialing 911 and then dragging Maria out to safety! Eventually, the firefighters responded to the blaze and prevented the home from being completely consumed in the flames!
Later, both Maria and Yolanda were treated for smoke inhalation related injuries. Yolanda also received first-aid for the multiple scrapes she suffered while helping her blind owner escape the burning home. But thanks the dog’s quick actions, the duo is safe and sound!
As per Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, this is not the first time Yolanda has dialed 911 to save Maria’s life. Previously, the faithful pooch had used this same trick to alert the authorities of 2 intruders who triggered a gas leak in their home.
Just last year, Yolanda had called 911 to seek help when Maria got knocked down unconscious!Maria, who is in her 60s and has been blind since 1992, attributes Yolanda’s life-saving phone skills to her special training.
The dog has been trained to press 9-1-1 on a specialized phone every time Maria utters the word “danger” – and this vital bit of command has already bailed her out of many sticky situations!
Maria made sure Yolanda was rewarded with many toys and treats after her recent brave rescue. More than anything, Maria believes that it is her dog’s unwavering love for her that always drives her to look out for her mommy! Yolanda is truly a superhero in every sense of the word!
