Plum is a 9 month old deaf and partially blind miniature Australian living in Nashville, Tennessee, with owner Aiden Mann and her sister Lola (5 year old StaffyDane cross). Mann and Plum melted the hearts of the world after Mann posted the video on TikTok. TikTok has garnered 52 million views and 12.7 million likes.
“People ask me how to wake up a deaf dog without scaring me,” Mann said in the caption. Her video shows the 25-year-old vet crouching on the floor next to her plum and blowing her very gently to wake her up without being overly frightened. Because she can’t hear and partially can’t see, she’s easy to get intimidated by.
After Mann blows on Plum, she jumps up, but as soon as she feels Mann hug her, she immediately calms down. When she feels him, she will want endless love and hugs. Mann fell in love the moment he met Plum and knew he wanted to give Plum a good life. It took a lot of “trial and error” to learn how to communicate with a dog without using voice commands, sounds, or gestures. But he realized that it was best to use sensory cues.
Using these sensory cues, he taught Pliva basic commands. For example, she can sit when Mann touches her chin. After Mann gently guides her nose in the direction they are going or touches her body in the direction he wants to go, she follows him and walks in a certain direction.
Not only did Plum become close to Mann, but she also became inseparable from her sister Lola. Both love to walk together, swim in the local creek, and curl up on the couch.
